Procedure Of Sample Collections:-
PATIENT PREPARATION

BLOOD COLLECTION

Fasting Sample Essential for---

  • Fasting Blood sugar

  • Lipid profile

  • Chol  / TG

  • Iron

  • Phosphorus

FASTING  MEANS SAMPLE TO COLLECT AFTER 10- 12 HRS OF MEAL. NOTHING SHOULD BE TAKEN IN BETWEEN EXCEPT WATER
Blood composition is significantly altered after consuming food, and consequently alters many clinical chemistry tests. If a patient has eaten, and the physician still wants the test, then "non-fasting" is written on the request so the laboratory can make a notation on the report as to why some of the test values may be different than expected

 

Following samples should be collected in morning between- 7 :00 –9 :00 AM

  • Hormones
  • Cortisol
  • Prolactin
  • Testosterone
  • Thyroid   
  • Urine electrolytes( Na/ K )
  • Vit B12,folic Acid,PTH

Three samples at ½ hourly interval are required for- LH/FSH/Prolactin( pooled sera is required for examination)

Amount of blood to be taken :

 

Before collecting the sample one has to go through the directory of service to check the amount of blood required for various tests. However general guide line is—
As Evacuated tube systems are in use – transfer required amount as mentioned in each tube
For up to 10 biochem. Tests  min amount..........    3.0 ml
If Serology/ hormonal tests also ..........................4.0 ml
For Iron Profile....................................... ...2.0 ml blood extra  
FOR IONIC CALCIUM AND TOTAL CALCIUM ESTIMATION PREFER SAMPLE COLLECTION WITH OUT TORNIQUET APPLICATION.  If not possible reduce tourniquet application time to 1 mint
For immunology/ hormone, electrolytes including Calcium assays samples should be collected preferably in Gel tube/SST. Unless specified.
